How to back up and restore the registry

Backing up the registry is important before making changes because it acts like a safety net – if anything goes wrong, you won’t risk messing up your computer or losing important settings.

How to do the backup:

  1. Start Registry Editor
  2. In Registry Editor, locate and click the registry key or subkey that you want to back up.
  3. Select File > Export
  4. Select the location to which you want to save the backup copy, and then type a name for the backup file in the File name field.
  5. Select Save

How to restore a backup:

  1. Start Registry Editor
  2. In Registry Editor, click File > Import
  3. In the Import Registry File dialog box, select the location to which you saved the backup copy, select the backup file, and then click Open.
