Every now and then, it’s good to restart your VPS or server (we recommend doing so once a week). Whether you do it after installing trading platforms, .NET packages, Windows Updates, or even in the unlikely event of applications stalling. Letโs go over a number of convenient ways in which you can restart your VPS or server in just such a situation!
To make things as convenient as possible, weโve actually set up a straightforward Restart VPS shortcut on the VPS desktop. This restarts Windows within 15 seconds of being double-clicked, and it applies to all of our VPS plans. You can see what the helpful little shortcut looks like below:
Making Your Own Restart Shortcut
If you canโt find the Restart VPS shortcut, then you can simply make your own! Hereโs how to do it:
1
Right-click either on the desktop or in the folder where you want to create your shortcut.
2
Select New from the context menu, then hit Shortcut.
3
In the Create Shortcut wizard, copy and paste the following command in the location field: shutdown.exe /r /t 0
4
Last but not least, name the shortcut whatever you want. Ideally, you’ll want to name it something that will remind you itโs a restart shortcut to avoid any accidental restarts. Fittingly, finish the process by clicking Finish.
And there’s your new restart shortcut! Place it wherever you feel is most convenient.
Old Reliable
Of course, thereโs always the tried-and-true manual method of restarting your server. Youโve likely done this on your own local machine a good few times, but in case you havenโt, hereโs how itโs done:
1
Right-click the Windows icon on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
2
From there, youโre able to see several options, including Shut down or sign out.
3
Hover over that option, and a new submenu of further options will appear. Move the mouse over to Restart and click.
Now Youโre Restarting With Portals
Finally, you can even restart your server from the ChartVPS Portal. Thereโs actually a wide variety of server functions available from the Portal, so letโs get right into it:
1
Log in to your ChartVPS Portal. Youโll need to input the email address and password that are associated with your account to proceed.
2
Once logged in, youโll be able to see Your Active Products/Services, which will include your server. Give your server a quick click.
3
If you scroll down just a tad on the next page, youโll see the Actions section. Here, there are all sorts of handy functions you can use, like Stop and Shut Down. What youโre likely looking to click on, though, is Restart. Click that to, well, restart!
Dedicated Servers
Dedicated Servers feature largely the same methods of restarting as a VPS. You can use the same Restart shortcut as on a VPS, or the Start -> Power -> Restart method.
The Portal does look a little bit different for dedicated servers, however, so letโs take a bit of a gander at that process.
1
Log in to your ChartVPS Portal as you usually would. Again, youโll need your email address and password.
2
This time, click on your Dedicated Server in the Your Active Products/Services section.
3
This is where things get a bit different. As you can see in the screenshot below, this page isnโt laid out in the same way as the VPS page. That said, itโs still pretty straightforward โ simply click the Reboot button beneath the icon of your server. It should be on the far right side of the three choices.
